Naturally sustainable BAMBOO is rapidly emerging into the fashion world. Fabric woven from bamboo yarn is light, almost translucent, and softer than cotton. It has a natural quality that feels like silk, but has the advantage of being machine-washable.
Wearability
Natural Bamboo has several properties which make it ideal for activity clothing
- Hypoallergenic; wearers who have reported allergic reactions to natural fibres, such as wool or hemp do not suffer reactions with bamboo. It is a naturally smooth and round fibre needing no chemical treatment to achieve this, meaning that there are no sharp spurs or residual chemicals to irritate the skin
- Absorbent; natural Bamboo is able to absorb up to three times its weight in water. In fabric form, this translates to an excellent ability to take moisture away from the skin allowing it evaporate. Hence bamboo clothing is ideal for wearing next to the skin especially for use as sports garments and is very soft and comfortable to wear.
- Anti-bacterial; this helps it to kill bacteria that thrive on clothing and cause unpleasant odours. It can even do the same for bacteria that live on human skin, making the wearer more pleasant to be around in the gym! It can also retain these properties after repeated washing and so gives a long lived benefit.
- Insulation; bamboos natural insulating properties help keep the wearer cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Sustainability; Environmental
It also is the most sustainable of the natural fibres. It is fast-growing – the type of bamboo used for making fabric, commonly known as Moso, can reach a mature height of 75 feet in just 45 to 60 days. Because of its natural antibacterial properties, it needs no pesticides. Bamboo can be replanted every year and so it is easy to maintain an organic crop.
After cropping unbleached bamboo fibre is very light on chemicals so further reducing the environmental impact.
And of course as a natural fabric at the end of life it will break down quickly and cause no lasting environmental impact.
Usability
Combined with 30% ORGANIC cotton, our BAMBOO fabric becomes softer than ever, has beautiful drape, and the fabric is able to take bright dye colours well and so screen prints perfectly.
