Health Benefits of Ithmid Kohl

Ithmid Kohl is a type of stone that when powdered and used on the eyes and surrounding area, it not only beautifies, but also provides immense health benefits. Ithmid kohl is a natural UltraViolet (UV) radiation blocker, and because of this it is extremely beneficial for those that are exposed to the sun often.

The Prophet (saws) used to use ithmid kohl on a daily basis as it brightens the eyesight, strengthens and increases the growth of eye lashes. It also keeps the eyes clear of dirt, dust and germs which is very important for your eye sight.

Traditionally, ithmid kohl is made from the mineral galena (lead sulfide). But nowadays, it is also sometimes made from stibnite, a non-toxic and safer mineral. To make ithmid kohl, the rock-like antimony is immersed in zamzam water for three to four days, which softens it up and removes impurities. It is then grinded on a grindstone until it becomes a fine powder.

Ibn al-Qayyim explains that ithmid kohl is good for all the eyes: It helps with eye strain, eases congestion in the tear ducts and detoxifies the moisture of the eyes. It also reduces skin flaps on the eyelids, mange of the skin around the eyes and relaxes the eyestrain. Moreover, it reduces headaches and protects the eyes from the harmful effects of light.

Using kohl also prevents Blepharitis, which is an eye infection that causes redness, irritation and swelling of the rim of the lid. Studies have shown that applying ithmid kohl twice a day significantly decreases symptoms of the condition.
